Start with eligible cities
Changing your Main City and receiving your first city are different actions. New rulers start in eligible New Lands. An established ruler can choose an eligible owned regular city subject to the current cooldown and reinforcement rules shown by the game.
Nine Core maps are excluded from Main City selection: Stoneward, Greybanner Hold, Lionwatch, Swiftgate, Crown Citadel, Aurum Keep, Oakwatch, Ironwatch and Roseguard. Owning a city there does not make it a valid destination for this change. Camps, Strongholds and Clan Towers are not regular-city substitutes either.
Open the destination’s action and read any eligibility message before arranging other moves around it. A location can be attractive on the map yet unavailable for this purpose.
Compare journeys you actually make
Think about the routes your kingdom uses repeatedly: reinforcing a frontier, gathering forces and returning from operations. Cross-map travel follows the active road network. Visual closeness on the world atlas does not guarantee a short journey.
An illustrative choice is between a secure production city and a forward city closer to a contested objective. The forward position may shorten some trips, but it also puts your anchor near the fighting. Compare the displayed routes and the support available from your other holdings. There is no universally best map coordinate.
Know where returning troops will go
Ordinary reinforcement returns use their recorded source if you still own it. If that source is no longer yours, the server redirects them to your current Main City. Changing the anchor therefore matters when you are also losing, abandoning or reorganizing other positions. Rally returns have separate rules: an enemy-held original source can trigger return combat. Check the rally route rather than assuming the ordinary reinforcement fallback applies.
Check Kingdom Activity before the move and again when outstanding forces return. Do not assume a returning army will appear at the city where you last expected it. Keep the new Main City’s garrison and surrounding situation in view while those movements settle.
Check the equipment scope
Master of Coin armor and the Ledger improve Main City Gold production. The Chain affects production across cities. Moving the Main City can therefore change which holding receives the Main City effects; it does not duplicate those effects onto the old and new locations.
Compare the relevant city production after the change has been confirmed. A high-level destination may look attractive economically, but that advantage still needs to be weighed against defense and travel. Keep bonuses with different scopes separate when making the comparison.
Treat the change as a small operation
First check that the destination is owned and eligible. Then review active reinforcements and marches, the cooldown or restriction message, and the troops left defending each important holding. Confirm only when the game permits the change.
Afterward, verify the Main City marker and pinned city-list entry. If the request stalls, refresh its state before repeating it. A second click is not a reliable way to determine whether the first request succeeded. Use the confirmed city and current routes for the rest of your plan.
